MALARIA PREVENTION – UGANDA
In Lukodi in Northern Uganda, Bright Futures works with its local development partner (the Bishop Onono Foundation) on a range of capacity building projects. Malaria is a huge problem in the region with many becoming extremely ill and dying. In Lukodi many people contract malaria more than once a year and this severely impacts their ability to earn an income and care for their children.
Bright Futures is embarking on a malaria prevention campaign in Lukodi and the wider region with local development workers using posters, talking to key leaders, convening health meetings and providing information on measures to reduce mosquito bites. In particular, they will be encouraging the use of mosquito nets as they are a most effective prevention method. Local government health providers will also be engaged to facilitate early treatment and in creating a village “talk malaria prevention” strategy.
The project will also involve a micro-enterprise making mosquito nets. This will have the dual benefit of helping reduce malaria and creating meaningful and fairly paid employment for local people. The cost of materials and making of each net is just $15.
We invite you to help prevent malaria and save lives by making a donation that will enable many at risk of malaria to have a mosquito net of their own.
