"My journey has been long, I have seen the Lord... now my life has been transformed!" - Jennifer's story

The words, heavy with emotion, still resonate with everyone who knows Jennifer Amuna. They’re a testament to a life pulled back from the brink, a journey from unimaginable despair to a place of hope and purpose. This is Jennifer’s story, a story woven into the very fabric of Bright Futures and our partner, Dorcas Creation Kenya (DCK).

When Jennifer’s son, Wycliffe, was born with microcephaly, a neurological condition leading to significant intellectual disabilities, her life spiralled. Ostracised by her family, wrongly accused of witchcraft, and then abandoned by Wycliffe’s father, she found herself in Nairobi’s vast slums, facing a battle few can comprehend.

Isolated and Facing the Unthinkable

Picture a young mother, alone and unsupported, struggling to survive in the harshest conditions. Imagine the anguish of having to tie your child to a bed in order to be able to leave your home to earn enough to buy a meagre meal. Jennifer’s daily reality was boiling a couple of tomatoes for a thin soup, each day blurring into a seemingly endless cycle of poverty and isolation.

The crushing weight of it all became too much to bear. In a moment of utter desperation, Jennifer found herself at the edge of an unfathomable act. But in that very moment, something miraculous happened. Wycliffe, spoke his first word: “Mum.” Overwhelmed by the sheer power of that single word, Jennifer collapsed, abandoning the plan that had taken root in her pain. It was, she believes to this day, divine intervention.

A Light in the Darkness: Nawiri Mama

Thankfully, Jennifer’s plight didn’t go unnoticed. Jane Thuo and the incredible team at DCK, our partners in Kenya, learned of her struggles. They extended a hand, inviting Jennifer to join the Nawiri Mama program. Bright Futures is blessed to work in collaboration with Nawiri Mama to facilitate their delivery of invaluable support and empowerment to mothers caring for children with disabilities in Nairobi’s slums. While mothers receive support, their children receive vital occupational therapy and other crucial interventions.

It’s difficult to put into words the scale of this project’s effect – not only with Wycliffe and Jennifer. Jennifer recently shared of her experience of joining the Nawiri Mama project. In the beginning she had articulated her needs with a glimmer of friendship with project. In the first 4 years Wycliffe had showed gradual benefits from therapy; however, his capacity to self care still wasn’t developed.

During the first meet-and-greet in March I had personally was greeted by Jennifer. She was very friendly. During the meet up she gave a summary about the support, empowerment she now holds in her program! Now being an instrumental team player, her own lived experiences are now providing valuable understanding and help to all mothers facing similar challenges. Through joining the Nawiri Mama, a flourishing and independent person has bloomed from that difficult time and experiences, now her life is a clear vision of purpose, meaning Jennifer is a success story!

The project supports have continued to shine onto 20 year old Wycliffe; in recent development he can walk and speak, providing clear capacity for self-care, leaving independence to Jennifer.

The DCK desperately needs further participants in Nawiri Mama than capacity can facilitate leaving all mums with dire circumstances awaiting.

The Power of Transformation and Urgent Needs

Visiting DCK recently was truly inspiring. Jennifer is radiating confidence and is now working within the Nawiri Mama program. Who best to empower other mothers than someone who has walked that same difficult path?

But this transformation is not just about one woman and her son. It’s about a system of support, a program that allows other women to escape difficult life issues and receive independence

But the need is greater than we can currently meet. The demand for the life-changing services of Nawiri Mama is overwhelming. With as little as $15,000, DCK could engage another occupational therapist, doubling the capacity of the program. Just 150 donations of $100 could transform the lives of so many more mothers and children!
